Position Description

The Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant will assist Emergency Medicine physicians and physicians from other specialties with the operation of the 16 bed Emergency Department at the Baptist Medical Center in Conway, Arkansas. These duties will be performed under the terms of a staffing contract between UAMS and the Baptist Health System. The Emergency Department is a Level 3 Trauma Center and operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Patients are typical for an Emergency Department setting presenting with a wide variety of complaints, most of them emergent in nature.

APRNs will be expected to staff lower acuity patients with minimal supervision from the collaborating or other physicians. Physicians will be available in the ED at all times for consultation. The APRN must have a high level of expertise to perform assessments/diagnosis/treatment of actual/potential problems of patients. APRNs will coordinate care, provide patient and family education, write prescriptions, and may perform procedures that are within the APRN’s scope of practice.

Physician Assistants will work under a supervising physician and several back up supervising physicians. The physician assistant’s scope of practice will be determined by a written protocol that has been approved by the supervising physician and the Arkansas State Medical Board.

Responsibilities

  • 20% The APRN or Physician Assistant will extend the patient care of the UAMS faculty physicians practicing in the Baptist Conway Emergency Department. 
  • 70% The APRN or Physician Assistant will be expected to provide comprehensive health assessments, determine diagnoses, implement treatment plans, prescribe medical treatments and manage health issues for patients in collaboration with the designated physician(s). 
  • 10% The APRN or Physician Assistant will work autonomously as well as in collaboration with a variety of individuals to diagnose and manage patients' health care problems; and will serve as a health care resource, interdisciplinary consultant, and patient advocate.

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in nursing for APRNs. Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program for PAs
  • 2 years nursing experience or six months experience as a physician assistant.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in Arkansas; APRN License (Adult Acute Care)
  • Must be able to operate all typical nursing equipment essential to performing the job (i.e., scales, procedure equipment, needles, blood pressure equipment, and EKG machines). 
  • Must have normal communication sensory requirement.
  • Must have the stamina to handle clinical shifts scheduled for up to 12 hours in length.
